Frequently Asked QuestionsTable of Contents
How do I request a tour of the capitol? Please just call my office and I will be happy to arrange a tour for you, your school group, etc. I will make every effort to meet you in person if you come down. If you want to sit in the gallery and watch some legislative action, please be sure to mention this when you call. (Please note that regular session begins the 2nd Tuesday in January, and extends about 100 days or so. So, if you want to see floor votes taking place, please keep these date parameters in mind when planning your visit). Back to TopWhere can I find a list of bills being discussed this session? All bills, and their supporting documents, can be tracked through our legislative website. You can choose to search in many different ways, including a word search for the entire Arizona Statutes. The direct URL is http://www.azleg.state.az.us/Search.asp Back to TopWhy doesn't the Arizona legislature meet year around ?Our Arizona constitution calls for a "part-time" legislature, presumably to allow legislators to have professions outside of politics and maintain a true citizen legislature. While you may find myself and other legislators working nearly year around on special committees or in special sessions, our official session is supposed to be approximately 100 days. (Note: session will last at LEAST until we pass a budget for the state as this is mandated by the constitution. This has been known to last closer to 150 days in the past). Back to TopWho do I talk to in order to get a job at the capitol? There are many different kinds of jobs down at the capitol. To find your perfect fit, check the online staffing information site through the main website for the state (www.az.gov) or specifically through the legislature's website at www.azleg.state.az.us. Contact information for each position will be listed with the posted position. Back to TopWhat is the best way to get to the capitol from district 6 ?The capitol is at 1700 W. Washington in downtown Phoenix. This is confusing to some, as it is actually bordered by Jefferson to the south and Adams to the north... Senator Gorman recommends simply driving down I-17 to the Jefferson street exit (immediately after the I-10 ramp) and then heading east (left) directly to the capitol. The capitol complex will be on your left just after crossing the train tracks at 19th avenue. You can park either in the big lot on your left that precedes the "tower" or continue east past the capitol complex and park at Wesley Bolin Plaza. The latter is recommended if you are visiting the House of Representatives or the Senate buildings, as they lie on the eastern portion of the capitol grounds. Parking is free in both lots. Back to TopWhen do I get a chance to give input on bills ?The answer is three-fold... First, you can contact Senator Gorman's office directly by phone, fax, mail, or email and express your opinion regarding a specific bill. See the contacts page for details. Second, you can come downtown to committee meetings and request permission to address the committee as a member of the community. There are kiosks in the lobby where you will register your request to address the committee. Track bills of concern to you online, and check for committee hearing schedules online as well. Third, you can comment on bills from the comfort of your own computer AFTER registering the first time in person through the kiosk mentioned above. Once you have created your account at the capitol lobby kiosk, simply log in and post your comment which will be visible to legislators during the committee meeting. Back to TopWill Representative Gorman come and talk to my group ?Yes! She will visit several groups in district 6 throughout the year. Requests can be made through her office. Please supply information on your group gathering to office staff when calling. Be sure to include: Location, date, time, number in attendance, group affiliation (i.e. what your group is about), and general ages of attendees. If there are any specific issues your group is curious about, be sure to mention them, as well. This helps Representative Gorman come better prepared to give a talk that is appropriate and interesting to your specific group members. Back to TopI am having trouble with a state agency, can you help ?We do our absolute best to help district 6 constituents with "issues" they are experiencing when dealing with state agencies. While we do not have the authority to directly influence other agencies, we can sometimes help just by knowing who to ask in order to get the job done. Please email your problem to Senator Gorman and she will do her best to help you find the answers you are looking for. Back to Top
